Man Arrested for Shooting and Killing His Wife

Buckeye police officers arrested 72-year-old John Elwyn Smith after he called 911 and stated he had just killed his wife and planned to kill himself. 

Dispatchers answered the call on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at about 5:20 p.m. Smith told the 911 operator that he shot his wife while she was taking a nap and that she was not breathing. He also relayed that the two were elderly and health issues had been weighing on them. Mug shot of John Smith

Police arrived at the home in Sun City Festival near Horsham Drive and Canyon Springs Blvd.  Officers located Smith outside his home, unarmed and waiting for them. Smith followed all officer instructions and was taken into custody. 

Police located a 69-year-old woman on the bed in the master bedroom with obvious gunshot wounds. A Buckeye Fire paramedic checked the victim and pronounced her dead at the scene. 

Smith was transported to the police station where he was read his rights and interviewed. He admitted to shooting and killing his wife because of health and financial burdens. 

Smith was booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail on one count of first-degree murder.
